U-matic. See ¾”.

uncircled takes. On a film show, takes shot but not circled for printing. Also known as B neg, these takes may be printed as desired or necessary during editing.

unit. An edited reel of mag track. For every film picture reel there are many sound units. Also called an element. A term used when sound is edited on film.

Universal Master. In a given situation, the UM is the video tape format from which all distribution formats can be derived.

upconversion. Transfer of one standard to a higher standard e.g. from SD tape to HD tape.

upcut. Cut off a line at the head or tail so that part of it’s missing.

up-rez. Transfer from one format to another format with a higher resolution, e.g. 720p to 1080i or DV to 35mm.

UPS. Uninterruptible Power Supply. A UPS prevents electrical power surges, drops, or outages from damaging or destroying the digital editing system.
