fade in. A dissolve to a filmed shot from black, sometimes white, and once in a great while yellow, blue, or another color.

fade out. A dissolve from a filmed shot to black, sometimes white, and once in a great while yellow, blue, or another color.

FCC. Federal Communications Commission. Independent government agency that regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable in the US.

FCM. Frame Code Mode. Notation on a digital editing system’s EDL that reports that the list is either DF (Drop Frame) or NDF (Non Drop Frame).

FCP. Final Cut Pro. See Final Cut Pro.

FFOA. First Frame of Action. Same as FFOP.

FFOP. First Frame of Picture. Same as FFOA.

field. Half of a video frame. A videotape frame is composed of two fields.

fill leader. See fill.

fill. Recycled movie film used to keep fill in the gaps and keep sync on sound reels where there is no sound or a portion has been removed temporarily. A film term that is also applied to digital editing where tracks and shots have electronic fill.

film lab. Facility that produces the final film reels that are projected in the theatres. The lab also creates the final special effects on film. Labs used to hum with the bustle of producing film dailies and the final prints for movie theatres. But the digital age and its need for dailies on digital tape, not film, and – coming soon – digital projection – has put this era in past. Many film labs have teamed with post production facilities to stay alive.

film recorder. Machine that transfers digital images to exposed film, most often a color timed internegative. There two types of machines: the EBR and laser film recorder.

film scanner. Device that inputs OCN and outputs digital data which is used in the digital intermediate process or for digital VFX.

Film Scribe. Avid program for film projects that allows you to create a cutlist for a film finish.

filter. A type of equalizing device that eliminates selected frequencies from a signal. For example, a high pass filter removes low frequencies and allows high frequencies to pass. A low pass filter would do the reverse.

Final Cut Pro. A pro-sumer and professional digital editing system made by Apple, Inc.

FireWire. A user-friendly, inexpensive cable that speeds multimedia data and files from digital professional, pro-sumer, and consumer products, (camcorders, DV tapes, DVDs, etc.) to personal computers or a digital editing system like Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Invented by Apple following IEEE 1394, FireWire continues to revolutionize the multimedia industry.

first cut., a.k.a. the editor’s cut, is the first cut put together of the show.

fit-to-fill. Fitting a video shot into a certain time slot by changing its speed. The editor tells the computer the length of the video and the audio shots and it calculates the speed change and puts in the video.

fix session. Post house session scheduled after the online to correct edits, add missing shots, and make dirt fixes.

flange. Hard plastic disk with a metal hub for winding up Moviola rolls.

flashback. Shot, sequence of shots, or scene which transports the story into the past.

flash card. See memory card.

flashforward. Shot, sequence of shots, or scene which transports the story into the future.

flash frame. Clear, white frame at the end of the take where light entered the film camera when it stopped between takes.

flatbed. Film editing machine where editor sits and reels run flat (horizontally).

flex file. Log file sent by telecine with film data for inputting into a digital system and finishing a project on film.

flip. An effect where the frame is turned upside down vertically e.g. if you flop the shot of a person standing on their head, they will now stand on their feet.

flop. Picture: An effect where the picture is turned horizontally 180 degrees so that an object on the left side of the frame is now on the right. Sound: Turning the track 180 degrees so it is silent when played.

Foley. Sound effects recorded in sync with specific actions on the screen. Foley is recorded by a foley artist (a.k.a. foley walker or foley dancer) on a foley stage as the picture runs on the screen.

Fostex. Digital audio recorder used to capture sound on set and location.

fps. Frames per second. Nominally film runs at 24 fps and tape at 30 fps in the US. These frame rates sustain persistence of vision (the frame rate at which the human eye perceives motion as continuous).

fragmented. Picture the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz after he’s been pulled apart and scattered by the witch’s winged monkeys. This is what happens to the data on hard disks after many recordings and deletions. Running a defrag program reorganizes the data into an efficiently accessible whole.

Frankenbite. Frankenstein + sound bite. New line pieced together from pieces of several lines and put in interviewee’s mouth. Coined by reality TV editors who struggle hard to tease out the veracity and continuity of the story from hours of footage.

free and clear. Music in the public domain that does not have a copyright nor require a fee.

freeze frame a.k.a. freeze or still frame. Effect where the action holds (freezes) for as many frames as desired.

frequency. Measured in hertz (Hz), frequency is the number of waves (cycles) that reach or pass a point in one second.

front porch. The horizontal sync signal located between the front edge of the blanking pulse and the front edge of sync.

FS. 1) False Start by camera noted on camera log. 2) A full shot. See also full shot.

full shot. (FS) A shot framed to include the whole person, animal, or object being shot.

fullcoat. Sound track where the entire surface is covered with brown, magnetic particles. 16mm track is always fullcoat. 35mm fullcoat is used to record mixed soundtracks.

fully filled. Contractually required by foreign distributors, fully filled music and effects tracks are those which contain all the effects as originally mixed.

FX. Special effect. Also written F/X or referred to as VFX.
